Deepfake giveaway scams reach the UK
AI-cloned videos of famous entrepreneurs "doubling" crypto deposits flooded the UK social media in 2023. The streams were synthetic, the giveaways were fake, and the deposits went to wallets controlled by fraud rings.
Synthetic live, synthetic promise
The 2023 generation of these scams used cloned footage and AI voices to run fake "livestreams" that looked live. QR codes and wallet addresses on screen collected deposits from the UK viewers with a promise of double returns.
The addresses were reused across thousands of victims, which is their weakness: on-chain analysis links every deposit, and exchange deposit points can be identified and notified.
Why people still fall for it
Familiarity does the work. A trusted face plus a live format plus urgency ("first 500 viewers") bypasses the scepticism that same person would apply to a text ad.
